The rail shoulder is embedded in concrete rail ties to secure elastic rail clips. Two main types exist: the pre-inserted shoulder, which is integrated during the manufacturing of the tie, and the weld-on shoulder, which is attached to the tie plate or steel sleeper..

Pre-inserted shoulders, as integral components of the railway fastening system, are embedded in concrete sleepers and collaborate with E clips to secure the rails. These cast-in shoulders are produced by casting iron in accordance with various standards, including GB/T 1348-1988, NF EN 1563(1997), ISO 1038, DIN 1693, JIS G5502 (2001), KS D 4302, GOST 7293(1985), and BS EN 1563(1997).

The weld-on shoulder is typically positioned on the rail where it is welded onto a flat steel plate, such as H bean or steel base. Produced through hot forging in accordance with the AREA standard, the material used for weld-on shoulders can be either low or medium carbon steel.
