AREMA Railroad Tie Plate

An AREMA railroad tie plate is a heavy steel base plate manufactured to strictly comply with the AREMA standards. Governing North American rail infrastructure, these specific plates sit between flanged T-rails and wooden ties to secure track gauge, prevent structural wood crushing, and evenly distribute extreme wheel loads.

Key Technical Specifications

Standard Cant Angle: The standard cant angle for a railroad tie plate depends entirely on the engineering standard of the region, but 1:40 (inward tilt,approximately 1.43 degrees) is the most common benchmark globally.

Steel Chemistry (AREMA Part 1): Plates are certified into two primary carbon tiers:

Low-Carbon Steel: Optimized for standard transit and structural flexibility ( AISI 1020/1030 or Q235).

High-Carbon Steel: Mandated as hot-worked (marked "HW") for heavy-haul freight segments to increase wear resistance (typically AISI 1045/1060).

Shoulder Styles: Features single-shoulder or double-shoulder variants. Modern high-tonnage lines use double shoulders tie plates to bracket both sides of the rail base, blocking lateral movement.

Common AREMA Plan Configurations

Under AREMA Chapter 5 ("Track"), tie plates are classified by standardized Plan Numbers. These numbers dictate the plate's overall length, width, thickness, and matching rail size to ensure complete compatibility across North American rail networks.

Hook Twin Tie Plates (AREMA Plan 241)

For areas with geometric restrictions like turnouts, frogs, and switches, standard rectangular plates will not fit. AREMA prescribes Hook Twin Tie Plates (HTTP) for these sections. They are narrow, elongated steel plates used in pairs that feature a forged hook to clamp the rail base down safely where spikes cannot be easily driven.
