• Double Shoulder Tie Plates: The modern industry standard, featuring two raised shoulders that bracket the rail base to resist lateral thrust and maintain a steady gauge. 

• Single Shoulder Tie Plates: Older or lighter-duty designs that use a single shoulder on the field side to anchor the rail.

• Custom Designs: Base plates are often engineered with cant angles (typically 1:20 or 1:40) to help incline the rail toward the center of the track for better wheel-rail contact. 

Rail tie plate is a thick, heavy-duty rectangular steel or iron plate placed between the steel rail and the underlying tie (sleeper) on a railroad track.
